A sale price is product information. When a shopping assistant compares options for a customer, the difference between the current price and a reference price can become part of the buying conversation. Brands need that comparison to be accurate, specific, and easy to maintain.
In its October 9, 2026 update, Shopify announced that Shopify Catalog now shares compare-at prices with AI shopping agents. Previously, agents reading Catalog saw the current price without the storefront’s markdown context. Shopify also identifies an admin setting that controls whether agents can view compare-at prices.
That gives brands another reason to review the offer data behind their product pages. It does not guarantee that an AI agent will recommend a product or display a particular savings message. Our recommendation is to treat the update as a catalog quality check before holiday promotions accelerate.
Check the exact variant being offered
Start with a small group of promoted products. For each one, record the variant, current price, compare-at price, currency, and intended promotion dates. Compare those values with the offer a shopper sees after choosing a size, color, or pack count.
A product family can contain different offers. A discounted single item and a full-price multipack should not inherit the same savings story simply because they share a page. Review the underlying variant records, then check the customer experience. A spreadsheet that looks consistent is not enough if selecting an option changes the offer.
Separate a markdown from a conditional discount
Write the offer in one plain sentence. Is the item marked down for everyone, or does the shopper need a code, membership, minimum basket value, or additional purchase? Those conditions belong in the review.
Do not assume a compare-at field communicates every qualification. Check whether the product copy, promotional image, and cart explain the same offer. If a graphic announces savings that only apply to one variant, make that scope clear. Keep the reference price grounded in the brand’s approved pricing records rather than choosing a larger number to make the discount look stronger.
Give the promotion an end-of-life plan
Assign one person to confirm when the promotion starts and another check for when it ends. Document which system controls each price and which connected channels receive it. This makes it easier to find the source of a mismatch instead of editing several downstream surfaces independently.
After the promotion ends, inspect a representative product page, its selected variant, and the cart. Where a connected shopping channel exposes the offer, check that presentation too. Record the time of the review. A screenshot without a timestamp or variant name provides limited help when the team investigates later.
Measure clarity before claiming discovery gains
Keep a short issue log: incorrect reference price, missing condition, outdated image, or mismatch after variant selection. Prioritize fixes that could change the customer’s understanding of what they will pay.
Use available channel reporting to evaluate performance, but avoid attributing every sales change to this catalog update. Promotions, availability, media, and seasonality can change together. The immediate operational goal is simpler: the offer should remain understandable wherever a shopper encounters it.
AI shopping makes structured product data more visible. Accurate pricing, clear conditions, and reliable promotion cleanup are practical foundations for that visibility.
